Starting a new business can be a daunting task. Even not knowing where to start can make the journey a difficult one. We've prepared a list to help get you started creating the next big thing. Hopefully it helps, and remember, you can always contact us for additional help along the way.

Where to Start

  1. Register for an EIN from the IRS
  2. Register with the TN Secretary of State 1
  3. Register with the TN Department of Revenue
  4. Obtain a Business License from your County Clerk's Office 2
  5. Obtain a Business License from your City Hall 3
  6. Register with the TN Department of Labor and Workforce Development
  7. Additional Registrations and/or Professional Licenses may be required depending on your business type (Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Department of Health, Depertment of Commerce & Insurance, etc...)
  8. Sign up with your local Chamber of Commerce (Optional, but recommended)
1. Sole-Proprietorships are not required to register with the TN Secretary of State's Office
2. A business license is required for each county you will be operating in and expect sales to exceed $3,000 annually
3. A business license is required for each city in which you will have a physical presence (e.g., storefront or office) within the city limits
